A couple students throwing admin out the back window.

The FlatPack Co. was founded in 2018 by two Cumberland College (University of Otago) hall residents struggling to suss beds for their flats. They had no time, no transport and certainly no money to buy a new bed, so both resorted to a dusty throwaway via Otago Flatting goods. As stressed as Dunedin freshers come, they came up with a solution that would pave the way for future students and remove much of the admin. The FlatPack was born. Since then we have expanded across the nation whilst staying a student run enterprise. We continue to uphold a culture you won’t find anywhere else. We pride ourselves on the ability to relate to students, seeing as we are students ourselves. The company offers the easiest and most affordable way to fit out your flat with furniture essentials, erasing fladmin altogether. FlatPack is now well known name among student flats throughout the country.

We have student ambassadors in halls across these regions who you may have come across. Introduce yourself, they may have a deal or two for ya. We’re constantly looking to expand our product range and improve our service to help students furnish their flats without all the admin. Got something to say? Flick us a message, we’d love to hear from you!

Meet The Team

Co-founders.

The war dogs of student beds, Cam and Angus both currently reside in Dunedin. A small idea then exploded over the 2018/19 summer break and they’ve never looked back. Each from rural backgrounds, they don’t mind getting their hands dirty, whether that be in the cowshed or breaking in a new flatpack bed…

The duo are proud of the solution which they have created that’ll make the transition into flats forever easier for students. While they currently look after the Dunedin market, The FlatPack Co. is also in full swing in Christchurch, Hamilton and Wellington. Meet our managers!

Operations Manager.

FlatPack’s Operations Manager manager Nick Tinholt has many stories behind his ponytail, moustache combo. One of those being the admin of sussing beds. He’s out to help fix the problem across New Zealand! And no ladies, he’s not single.

Campus Team Member.

Sophie Tyrrell is a farm girl but knows a thing or two about flatting. Often found dancing her way around UC campus, she’s on a new mission to dance beds into New Zealand flats, admin free!

Ambassadors.

We also run a team of ambassadors within each region. The FlatPack Company is a student run visionary and we’re in search of ambassadors for the 2020 year. We know the ins and outs of what it’s like being stuck for cash therefore the ambassadors role is a paid position within a team that’s all about having a bit of fun. You won’t find a more flexible way to fund Saturday nights. Get the word out, share a few posts on our behalf and spread the solution, it’s as simple as that.

Timeline

2018

The problem was identified in October. First year students were able to buy second hand beds off graduating students leaving the area in October/November. This is all good and well however, these graduating students need their beds until the day they leave the area. Also the fact that students had no time, transport or anywhere to put them added to the problem. Not very convenient for freshers in the middle of exams. It’s honestly the last thing you want to be thinking about. We trialed a solution within the Dunedin market which proved very popular among a few lucky mates. The FlatPack Company became a registered business in late 2018.

2019

We found that this problem was in fact was across most of the country. We created a model which could be scalable. We then looked to expand into Christchurch, Hamilton and Wellington. Managers were employed in each of these regions along with more than 30 ambassadors. We went to work on building culture and getting creative. In June we released our second bed ‘The Golden Child’ for all of the golden children in this country. We have big plans in mind and are determined to make the move into flatting fu*king easy.

2020

Deliveries under the new model began on January 4th in all four regions. It was very busy times but the team at The FlatPack were able to deliver every single bed on the day which the customer requested. That’s a 100% strike rate! The Flatpack has since expanded across the whole country.
